Am I A Chap? seeks to classify every species and sub species of English gentleman that one may observe throughout the seasons. From the flamboyant young fop to the crusty old duffer, Am I A Chap? will help readers to spot chaps in their natural habitat. The book is based on the long-running section in satirical gentlemen’s journal The Chap (est. 1999), in which readers send in their photographs asking for sartorial judgement. It is usually the whole ensemble that fails to reach the mark, though often it might be a misplaced tie clip, a wrongly coloured sock or a poorly arranged cravat. From bankers to burlesque stars, Guards officers to police officers, toddlers to octogenarians, Goths to doctors, men and women from all walks of life have queued up to have their attempts at achieving “Chappishness” assessed. The book looks at established chaps such as Beau Brummell, Max Beerbohm, Edward VIII, and Cary Grant; and gives guidance on how to avoid the pitfalls awaiting the unwary chap.

Born in London in 1965, Gustav Temple is the founder of The Chap Magazine, the satirical gentlemen’s journal first published in 1999. Today he is the full-time editor and publisher of that journal, as well as penning freelance journalism for other publications. Mr. Temple is the co-author of four Chap-related books: The Chap Manifesto (Fourth Estate, 2002); The Chap Almanac (Fourth Estate, 2003); Around the World in 80 Martinis (Fourth Estate, 2004); The Best of The Chap (Boxtree, 2005).
